When teenage girls wake up in the morning, what are the first things they do? They brush their teeth, they wash their face and, before going downstairs to eat breakfast, they look in their mirror for an hour or more, trying to decide what to wear.
Why do they do this? A teenage guy can roll out of bed and take less than two minutes to pick any random T-shirt lying on his floor, yet a girl would walk into school with him thinking how charming he is and wishing he would ask her out.
So we come back to the same question: Why do girls work so hard every morning to get dressed in the perfect outfit and look good? Who are they trying to impress? Girls work hard, spend money and waste so much time to show off to their friends and crushes how glamorous they are. Does looking beautiful prove to people that you are worth being their friend? You could lose weight over summer vacation and come back to school looking like a celebrity, and all of a sudden everyone wants to be your friend. Or you could just be yourself and not worry about what everyone thinks and still have those true friends who actually care about your interests, feelings and personality.
But even then, teenage girls will keep going through all this trouble, because they want to make a statement. They do these things because there is a feeling when you look in the mirror and know you look amazing. And when that happens, you want to go out and make sure your friends or that guy you really like get to see you when you look your best.
So at the end of the day, you will get home and cuddle on your bed in your favorite sweatpants and cuddly T-shirt and go through all the pictures you took that day with a big smile on your face. No, you don’t need to go on an MTV reality show to get attention from your friends or have that five minutes of fame on TV to brag to everyone about how cool you are. Rather—corny, but true—it’s that self-assurance that leaves you feeling beautiful inside and out.
