Of all the senses, I would say that smell is the sense that is best at vividly bringing back memories. To a large extent, smell is more personal than other senses because it brings back memories of people—not just places or things. There is the cologne of the guy you’re interested in, or your mom’s perfume; things that naturally make you think about or remember them. Those lingering warm smells that everyone loves help you remember happy times in your life, like…. SUMMER! J

It only recently occurred to me how common suicide is. Tragically, suicide is the third most common cause of teen deaths in America. Many teenagers don’t know that suicides are even happening in the social scenes around them. But in a survey of high school students, the National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center found that almost one in five teens had thought about suicide, about one in six teens had made plans for suicide, and more than one in 12 teens had attempted suicide in the last year. That is enough to scare me, and should put other teens [ ...continue reading ]

Every year, Mary J. Blige hosts a benefit concert to raise money for young women and girls who cannot afford to stay in school, graduate or begin their careers. She has created the FFAWN foundation, which raises thousands of dollars every year for these girls. Blige has ultimately made a huge difference in the lives of these girls by giving them opportunities to experience life and become educated and prepared for success.
Recently, I was able to volunteer and help the Euro RSCG Worldwide PR staff by tweeting and advocating the event to the public. Many celebrities showed [ ...continue reading ]

With the school year coming to an end, many people are starting to see summer peeking through when we have the occasional day of sun. Ignoring the inconsistent periods of long-lasting rainfalls and thick foggy air, we inhabitants of the East Coast are getting antsy for those enduring days of sun we all desire. There is nothing better than walking out of your house in the morning and smelling the fresh and distinct scent of spring. (You know what I’m talking about.) It is all those signs of summer that we simply want more of: the flowers blooming, reasons [ ...continue reading ]

You might recognize their names from YouTube, Twitter or Facebook, but Elle and Blair Fowler have been making videos and attracting fans since their early teenage years. They have been inspiring girls across the world with their beauty and fashion tutorials, getting attention from cosmetic companies—making The Sisterhood their No. 1 fan
We have been watching the Fowler sisters from the beginning; listening to their beauty advice and cheering them on. They might be close sisters, but Blaire and Elle have their own YouTube accounts for their different videos. With their corky and outgoing personalities, Elle, as AllThatGlitters21, [ ...continue reading ]

When teenagers are looking for articles on current events or the latest scandal in the news, it is not very likely they will sit at the kitchen table reading a newspaper. Although the newspaper has been very popular to adults for centuries, the new way to reach teenagers—or anybody for that matter—is through the Internet. People all over the world want their news, and they want it fast.
Earlier this year, Egypt erupted in protests. Around January, nearly 10,000 people began filling the streets of Cairo to demonstrate against the government. They marched through the streets demanding the [ ...continue reading ]

One of the first things you look at when meeting someone is their teeth. With that first glance, you notice those pearly whites that complete either a charming smile…or a not-so-charming smile. Taking care of my teeth and keeping them white is very important to me. It is part of my daily routine to brush and floss my teeth. I normally use Crest products, such as their whitening toothpaste and whitening strips. Crest never fails me and has proven to be one of the best dental companies in the business.
Recently, I was given Rembrandt products to review. With [ ...continue reading ]

This past winter vacation, something very rare happened; I was home with all my siblings. We were never really close when we were growing up. With two years between each sibling, we were all at different stages in our lives. It wasn’t until recently (when we were all similar ages) that we became close and could really get along. Just a few weeks ago, my father went to Dubai, leaving us four kids alone for a week. Prior to his departure, we made a huge trip to Fairway to purchase a whole week’s worth of food. We [ ...continue reading ]

Time is of the essence – Image taken from CreativeCommons.org
Time is one of the only things in life that cannot possibly be stopped. No matter how hard you try to slow time down, you must realize that it just doesn’t work that way. If you are running late to school or are up till midnight trying to finish work, there aren’t any ways to add time, either. Of course, there are times when we all wish that we could just pause life to savor moments, catch a breath or stop the future—but the ugly truth is that [ ...continue reading ]

Almost two months ago, my school, Solomon Schechter Westchester, took my grade on a community service trip to Washington/Baltimore. We were working with Panim, a Jewish organization that educates people about homelessness. The trip was focused on poverty and homelessness. We talked with many homeless people on the streets and learned how to respectfully interact with people living on the streets. We also toured many different shelters, including drug addict rehabs, food shelters, school for underprivileged children and the kind [ ...continue reading ]
