Paris Hilton’s South Beach perfume is a light fragrance, filled with vitality and energy. It lasts all day long and when applied, leaves a fresh scent on your whole body. I am a perfume collector, so I have many perfumes from all around the world. Trying different fragrances from different places allows experimentation of scents that are sweet, fruity, warm, soft and strong. One of my favorite perfumes I own is Chanel Chance. And Paris Hilton’s South Beach is very similar, making it the perfect perfume for summer. It smells very natural; like a mixture of sweet roses. A whiff of this sensual scent always leaves you wanting more. It isn’t too fruity and has just the right amount of sweetness to linger for hours.

Not only is the South Beach perfume perfect for summer, it is also very reliable when freshening up after the beach. Following a quick shower and change of clothing, a spritz of this fragrance is all you need to complete your preparation for a great night. While trying this perfume, I noticed that it lasts all day long and draws attention from the people around you. If you are looking for a new sweet perfume this summer, Paris Hilton’s South Beach fragrance is the way to go.

It only recently occurred to me how common suicide is. Tragically, suicide is the third most common cause of teen deaths in America. Many teenagers don’t know that suicides are even happening in the social scenes around them. But in a survey of high school students, the National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center found that almost one in five teens had thought about suicide, about one in six teens had made plans for suicide, and more than one in 12 teens had attempted suicide in the last year. That is enough to scare me, and should put other teens on notice about the severity of this issue.

One of my closest friends in school has been depressed for almost a year now and recently told me that he has tried on several occasions to hurt himself. He is seeing a professional, his parents are aware of his condition, plenty of friends support him and yet he is still unhappy with his life. An article in the July issue of Cosmopolitan talks about suicide and indicates that even the happiest, most successful people commit suicide. One might ask: how can a person so seemingly happy, talented, friendly and successful succumb to suicide? There isn’t any answer to that. People can be happy and positive on the outside, but mentally unstable on the inside at the same time.

My good friend may seem like a joking and outgoing guy in school, but when it comes down to it, he has a lot of emotions and negative feelings about himself locked up and hidden from his peers. As one of his closest friends, it is very important for me to frequently contact him and ask how he’s doing. I’m there for him when he needs to vent about his problems, brag about his accomplishments or just completely break down. I purposely go out of my way to even do little things for him that I know will make his day better (even just the slightest bit). But a person so unhappy who has suicidal thoughts needs special help. Sometimes being a good friend isn’t enough.

A younger girl in the freshman class at my school has also been known for having depression and suicidal thoughts. Growing up with a bad family history, uncomfortable living situations, unfriendly peers and a stress-related illness, this young girl has already been through it all. I’m certain she receives professional help, but this has not stopped her from wanting to commit suicide. This young girl has truly been seeking—almost begging for—the attention she needs. Freaked out by her sickness and bad temper, kids around her don’t understand her vulnerability and sensitivity. This was clear after she recently left personal death notes in the girls’ bathroom, saying goodbye to the world and “I hope you don’t miss me.” Luckily, the notes were found before she could harm herself, and she was taken for immediate care.

Suicide is nothing to joke about. It is extremely serious and more common than people think. It may seem like a topic too mature to share with younger teenagers and adults but informing teens while they are young enough can reduce the amount of teenagers who are actually doing it. If you ever notice a friend or even just a peer you know who seems depressed or alone, don’t hesitate to comfort them and offer help—or tell an adult you know and trust. You might—literally—be saving someone’s life.

She has created the FFAWN foundation, which raises thousands of dollars every year for these girls. Blige has ultimately made a huge difference in the lives of these girls by giving them opportunities to experience life and become educated and prepared for success.

Recently, I was able to volunteer and help the Euro RSCG Worldwide PR staff by tweeting and advocating the event to the public. Many celebrities showed up on the red carpet and were seated among the audience supporting FFAWN. After a silent auction and info session about the cause, the concert started. My ALL-TIME-FAVORITE music artist performed first. Corrine Bailey Rae showed up on stage (giving me butterflies) in a gorgeous dress and sang two of her most famous songs: “Put Your Records On” and “Just like a Star.”

Then, as luck would have it, when Jill Scott got on stage to perform, Corrine Bailey Rae sat down at my table! I was able to talk to my favorite celebrity; I discovered how sweet she is. When I told her how one of her songs is my alarm every morning to wake up, she hugged me and joked with me, saying that I probably know the song better than she does. Ha!! J

As the concert continued, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson and Mary J. Blige sang their hearts out. You could tell that these women vocalists were chosen for a reason. They set examples for our society by being confident, successful and determined women, and have inspired many girls and women to pursue their educations and live their dreams.

We should all thank Mary J. Blige for creating this wonderful and inspiring foundation: FFAWN. Because of her, many girls living in some of New York’s most rundown neighborhoods are given the opportunity to become successful and educated adults.

We love you, Mary J.!

With the school year coming to an end, many people are starting to see summer peeking through when we have the occasional day of sun. Ignoring the inconsistent periods of long-lasting rainfalls and thick foggy air, we inhabitants of the East Coast are getting antsy for those enduring days of sun we all desire. There is nothing better than walking out of your house in the morning and smelling the fresh and distinct scent of spring. (You know what I’m talking about.) It is all those signs of summer that we simply want more of: the flowers blooming, reasons not to wear a coat, spending more time outside, shopping for color, watching kids play sports outside, etc. All these things are teasers that give us the impression that summer isn’t too far away.

By this point in the spring season, almost everyone is focused on their summer plans (some are even finished planning through the end of August). And girls in high school are searching for their prom dresses while waiting to be asked by that special someone. Pressure is being put on students by teachers and professors who understand that starting May, kids have acquired “summer fever”—getting distracted from work and choosing to think summer is only a couple of weeks away. Finals are right around the corner and the stress of keeping grades up is getting in the mix of all the other social aspirations during the ending of the school year.

But what is the reason for this “summer fever”? Because we all know that it’s not just teens and kids feeling it—adults are, too. Let’s face it; we are all tired of the cold and gloomy weather and are using any hint of spring to remind us that summer is fast approaching.

I was recently reading an article in the May issue of Cosmopolitan about summer and all the things we love about it. Of course, I think it’s fair to say that the beach is the No. 1 hot spot of the summer (no pun intended)—at least for my friends and me. It is the place we always think of going to in the summer, the place to lay out in the sun and just relax. We look forward to the summer so that we can experience and remember the same memories that we make every year. The article in Cosmopolitan explains that it is most natural for humans to remember their memories on beaches and relaxing places in the summer because those are the places that we are most happy. Yes, one can argue that spending time on the beach may be unhealthy, especially for your skin; but I like to think that as long as you are taking care of yourself and using proper amounts of SPF, going to the beach is a positive experience—and it’s a blissful place to be.

With everyone working hard all year round, we wait and wait for summer because it’s the universal time to enjoy our lives and create memories that will last a lifetime.

We have been watching the Fowler sisters from the beginning; listening to their beauty advice and cheering them on. They might be close sisters, but Blaire and Elle have their own YouTube accounts for their different videos. With their corky and outgoing personalities, Elle, as AllThatGlitters21, and Blaire, as juicystar07, have more than 600,000 subscribers. Their glamorous insights and appearances attract more and more fans every day. Lucky enough, three of our Sisters were able to meet them this past summer. Evelyn, Taryn, and Kelsey took pictures and videos, and even got to ask them a few questions about what they do.

Realizing their increasing fame and success, Blaire and Elle decided to open up their new website, http://www.elleandblair.com, where they have open discussions about beauty and fashion tricks. These sisters work together expressing their love for fashion and trendsetting. On their website, they also blog about exciting beauty products, post many videos (connecting to their YouTube pages) and keep in close touch with all their loving fans.

The Sisterhood supports the Fowler sisters and is hoping to meet them again soon so we can share our similar goals, such as connecting to teenagers, and sharing what we love about new and upcoming trends.

When teenagers are looking for articles on current events or the latest scandal in the news, it is not very likely they will sit at the kitchen table reading a newspaper. Although the newspaper has been very popular to adults for centuries, the new way to reach teenagers—or anybody for that matter—is through the Internet. People all over the world want their news, and they want it fast.

Earlier this year, Egypt erupted in protests. Around January, nearly 10,000 people began filling the streets of Cairo to demonstrate against the government. They marched through the streets demanding the resignation of their longtime president Hosni Mubarak. Inspired by Tunisian demonstrators, Egypt’s protesters took full advantage of social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook to advocate, inform and organize their actions. However, around Jan. 27, the Egyptian government banned the Internet. Social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter were being blocked to make sure that teenagers and young activists would no longer be able to organize or communicate via the Internet. It was an attempt to make it nearly impossible to communicate in Egypt—both within the country and with the rest of the world.

With the realization that teenagers have the power to spread information to other teenagers from across the world, Egypt was smart to disable such networking services. Such a blockage was, of course, unfair to the residents and protesters in Egypt, but it reinforces the notion that the power of social media dominates any other type of communication. It is the fastest way to get information across to the world and the one service that will (almost) always help you find what you are looking for. The government’s action not only served to restrict activists in Egypt but it also demonstrated the importance of social media and the power it has in our world.

Recently, I was given Rembrandt products to review. With something as essential as healthy and clean teeth, I was a bit skeptical about trying a new product I had never heard of before. But I was wrong; after following the instructions written clearly on the Rembrandt boxes, I noticed a difference in my teeth. Even people around me complimented me on my brighter smile. I used Rembrandt whitening strips for about a week, and it was clear that they had an impact. Although Rembrandt whitening strips have fewer strips in a box than the Crest strips, Rembrandt’s are also nearly half the price. Next time I go to CVS, I will be sure to buy more Rembrandt products.

Having a bright smile is an essential quality in one’s appearance. Trying to count how many times you laugh or smile in one day would be nearly impossible—that is why making sure to keep your teeth healthy and clean is so important. A beautiful smile is a bright smile. Go, Rembrandt!

This past winter vacation, something very rare happened; I was home with all my siblings. We were never really close when we were growing up. With two years between each sibling, we were all at different stages in our lives. It wasn’t until recently (when we were all similar ages) that we became close and could really get along. Just a few weeks ago, my father went to Dubai, leaving us four kids alone for a week. Prior to his departure, we made a huge trip to Fairway to purchase a whole week’s worth of food. We were all pretty hyped up and prepared to be parentless for a week.

We were excited and enjoying one event after another—fun dinners, movie marathons, etc., since there was nobody there to tell us what to do or when to go to sleep. We were all having a great time until 6:00p.m. Tuesday, when the power went out. We spent the next couple hours lighting candles around the house, gathering blankets to keep us warm and calling electricians. When I felt a moment of fear and worries, those negative feelings were quickly replaced by the realization that there wasn’t anywhere else I’d rather be. Having the opportunity to hang out with my brothers and sister doesn’t normally happen, so it was important to me to take advantage of it now. However, after giving up on trying to get the power back on, we Diamond siblings made the best of it.

The Diamond Siblings!

We sat on the couches all cuddled up playing card games, eating snacks and bonding as a family. We were able to really talk and share stories and experiences. We waited till midnight for a deliveryman to arrive at our house with pizzas. Some people may have been upset or nervous during a time like this, but not me. There were no electronics to distract any of us. Instead of going on our computers or watching television, we were forced to sit together and embrace each other’s company, something I was very keen on doing. This unfortunate yet exciting event was one of the best bonding moments I have ever had with my family. It reminded me how much I love my siblings and miss their company on a normal basis. I finally fell asleep, under layers and layers of blankets with my sister, and the power came back on at 3a.m. I can honestly say it was a very unusual evening—and one of the best nights of my life.

Time is one of the only things in life that cannot possibly be stopped. No matter how hard you try to slow time down, you must realize that it just doesn’t work that way. If you are running late to school or are up till midnight trying to finish work, there aren’t any ways to add time, either. Of course, there are times when we all wish that we could just pause life to savor moments, catch a breath or stop the future—but the ugly truth is that we must face reality and deal with the “now.” It seems so crazy every time a sibling or friend of mine has a birthday—it’s always a reminder that yet another year has passed. Why do we get excited about this “celebration”? Often, I wish things could slow down so I could live each experience without thinking about the next one, which is speeding toward me. When we go to graduations, weddings or any other events that scream out the notion that life is moving on, we are forced to keep up. Although this might be hard at times, it trains us to manage our lives under pressure. Being able to schedule our time wisely will ultimately benefit and prepare us for our futures.

Another example of time getting in the way of a situation is when you’re so happy and having the time of your life but in your peripheral vision, you see the clock ticking away, reminding you that you don’t have forever. The next thing you know, you’re already planning weeks in advance when recent events are still fresh in the air. It could be one of the most exciting nights of your life, but then the thought of it ending can completely ruin it. The night of my “sweet 16” was one of the most thrilling nights of my life. I was so ecstatic that I was in the same room with all of my friends and family, dancing and having a good time. I was in such a peaceful state of mind that nothing would be able to bring me down. But when the night was over and it was time to go home, I started feeling it. This night that I had been looking forward to for so long was over. So I guess I know it’s true when people say time flies when you are having fun.

And of course, time drags when you’re not having fun. It makes you feel trapped, and all you can do is deal with it! In school, it’ll be the last period of the day with 25 minutes remaining till class is dismissed, and you will notice that almost every student in the class has his or her eyes scanning the clock, counting down the minutes till we can pack up our bags and run out. This is a classic example of time taking forever to pass. Sometimes it can get pretty bad, like when you are sitting in traffic or you are exhausted after a long volleyball practice and all you can think about is getting home and making yourself snug in bed.

Time is precious. It’s your decision how you spend it and manage it. If you do too much during a weekend before finals, you can run out of time to study before your exam. If you sit around all summer doing nothing, you can be really missing out on amazing and rare experiences. So make the most of your time—you might not be able to stop it or add any extra minutes, but what you DO with your time is completely controllable.

Almost two months ago, my school, Solomon Schechter Westchester, took my grade on a community service trip to Washington/Baltimore. We were working with Panim, a Jewish organization that educates people about homelessness. The trip was focused on poverty and homelessness. We talked with many homeless people on the streets and learned how to respectfully interact with people living on the streets. We also toured many different shelters, including drug addict rehabs, food shelters, school for underprivileged children and the kind of homeless shelters that you would find in New York City. This trip really shook my perspectives on life.

We talked to a former homeless man, and he made me realize that one small choice can change your life forever. He explained to our group that it took him three seconds to decide that he was going to try a hardcore drug, but 30 years to finally quit using it. He ended up living on the streets. His testimonial left my classmates and me in deep thought. How could one quick decision end up affecting your whole life and possibly lead to throwing it all away? His story makes me think more than once about the choices I make now. Of course I am not going to do drugs—but my experience on this trip, and hearing about this one person’s disastrous choice, definitely inspires me to really consider my options when I have to make a big decision.
