Facebook Overload

facebook overload

Throughout the past couple of years, social networking websites have increasingly become one of the central focuses of everyday life. Not only teens, but adults as well have seriously begun utilizing sites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn as great ways to connect with old and new friends, colleagues and family. Each site offers relatively the same form of communication but is set apart by its own distinct set of characteristics. With so much going on in the cyber world, it is easy to get caught up in these sites and lose touch with reality.

The Quest for the Stanley Cup: A Response to a GQ Article

boston-bruins-photos

On June 9, 2011, GQ Magazine’s Jonah Keri released an article entitled “The Boston Bruins Vs. the World,” which shocked and enraged the enormous and extremely passionate population of Bruins fans everywhere. In a clear attempt to provoke this favorite team and their fans during the final series of the playoffs, Keri illustrates his jealousy when implying that Boston fans have become “spoiled” with too many championships from 2000 to the present day.

Keri, who was born in Montreal, attempts to convey the message that even U.S. hockey fans do not support the Bruins bringing home the cup. [ ...continue reading ]

Back to School, Back to Reality

This summer has come off as somewhat of a dream, a dream that I don’t ever want to wake up from. Sadly, my sun-kissed skin has already started spending its time under fluorescent lights, and my alarm blares every morning at 6 a.m. In my last few weeks of summer, I tried to live it up and fit in everything I could before I packed up and moved to school.

After two months at my first real job—an internship at the PR agency Euro RSCG Worldwide PR—then field hockey camp with my high school team in [ ...continue reading ]

Review: Paris Hilton’s Tease and Jessica Simpson’s Fancy Nights

Every teenage girl has her own routine when it comes to getting ready in the morning. From makeup to clothes to simple teeth brushing, the products girls use before they leave the house are numerous and varied. One of the most important aspects in that daily routine is a girl’s “signature scent”—i.e., the fragrance she chooses to wear.

After recently discovering two exciting new fragrances: Paris Hilton’s Tease and Jessica Simpson’s Fancy Nights, I was immediately captivated by the sweet smell of Tease. I usually wear sweeter smelling fragrances, so I was a bit biased towards Tease. [ ...continue reading ]

Walkie Talkies

“Taryn to Gadea, do you read? Over.”

“Hey girl, reading loud and clear, Over.”

“I have a humanities paper due tomorrow and it’s not even close to done. F? Over”

“Hahahaha, BUMMER!…. Over.”

This is just one of the conversations my best friend Gadea and I have every night from 10:30 to 11:00 at night.  Attending a boarding school, being on time is expected. One of those requirements is we have to be in our rooms by 10:30, lights out at 11:00.  Gadea and I have far too much to talk about every single day and not enough [ ...continue reading ]

NKOTB

There’s a recent Saturday I will never forget. It was my last opportunity to take an overnight at home, because the next weekend would be a closed weekend due to final exams. Of course, I decided to go home, but I wasn’t alone. My two best friends, Carly and Gadea, accompanied me for a wild night we never had intended on.

Upon getting in the car and driving to my beachside residence, Carly, Gadea and I had no definite plans for that night. None of the ideas we were throwing around seemed that fun or exciting. It was [ ...continue reading ]

Feliz Navidad, Espana! (Merry Christmas, Spain)

Saying goodbye is one of the hardest things a person can do, even if it’s just for a little while. For a teenage girl to be leaving her best friend for a whopping three and a half weeks is never easy. My best friend, Gadea, goes to boarding school with me and lives in Madrid, Spain, when she’s not at school. I only see her during the school year, and after this year, she will return to Spain to finish the rest of her high school career there. Everyday spent with her now is precious. This is why [ ...continue reading ]

“Photography takes an instant out of time, altering life by holding it still.” —Dorothea Lange

Everyone wishes she or he could turn back time, revisit the good memories and erase the bad. Even though this is not possible, pictures are the closest thing we have to it. When you look at a picture, it opens a flood of memories from that moment, and they are forever captured. Photography, one of my greatest passions, has assisted me in capturing and sharing some of my best and worst memories. In the rare event I don’t have my camera, I rely [ ...continue reading ]

Blackberry Phenomenon

For years, BlackBerrys have had known uses for business purposes only: Mainly for colleagues to e-mail one another, keep their schedule organized and, of course, to make phone calls. The BlackBerry was and still is ideal for any serious businessperson, such as my mother and father, but it now has become the phone to have among teens.

When you make a new friend or catch up with an old one, they might ask you, “Oh, what’s your number?” Today that phrase is frequently replaced with “Oh, you have a BlackBerry! What’s your PIN?” A PIN is assigned with [ ...continue reading ]

Bonjour!

At 7:25 every night I say goodbye to my best friend: my BlackBerry. I slide my phone into the box labeled with my last name in the common room and trudge down the long hallway to my room. At 7:30, my prefect’s voice echoes loudly through the dorm: “Study hall’s in, girls!!” Great.

Now for the worst part. My Internet shuts off. I am stuck sitting uncomfortably at a wooden desk for two hours. Unable to text, Facebook, IM, or video chat until 9:30, when the Internet is back and all is as it should be.

Cruel and [ ...continue reading ]
