As I sat at my graduation party last weekend, watching the slide show my mother so dutifully put together, I looked back on all of my other graduations. There was my preschool graduation, where I proudly posed with my “diploma” (a certificate tied with yarn) and cardboard cap. There was the 5th-grade moving-up ceremony, middle school graduation, and of course, high school graduation. Yet something seemed different about graduating from college. All of the other times, I knew what lay ahead: elementary school, middle school, high school and college.
There was always a direct path for me to follow, [ ...continue reading ]

June is always a busy month for high school seniors. Along with the warm weather comes the end of school, finals, graduation and the very hyped-up senior prom. Preparing for this important night may seem like it warrants a lot of stress.
When I was in 10th grade I went to my first senior prom. I had an older boyfriend at the time, and after pleading with my mother I was surprised that I was allowed to attend. I agonized over finding the “perfect” dress, how I should do my hair and what shoes to wear. Soon, thinking about [ ...continue reading ]

This summer has been great. The weather is finally clearing up, and I am finding myself busy with diving, tennis, synchronized swimming and spending time with my family. If your summer feels boring and rainy, get involved with sports and activities.
One example of spending time with my family and getting involved in an activity at the same time was my cousin’s baby shower. We had it at my house, and it was loads of fun. I felt like I was really helpful, and even though it was stressful having about 30 people at our house, it was a [ ...continue reading ]

The dating scene isn’t the same as it was in your grandparents’ age…even in your parents’ age for that matter. You’ll be hard pressed to find a boy willingly hanging out in his varsity letterman jackets or a girl wearing pins that boast her boyfriend’s name. However, that doesn’t mean that teenagers have fallen out of love with love itself. Maybe fancy dinners and romantic walks in the park are outdated, but dating is still going on, just less conventionally then in generations past. So what makes a good date these days?
In order to have a fun time [ ...continue reading ]

The cliché about boys and men may be that they think about sex every seven seconds, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we girls and women have something on our minds even more frequently: weight. As a teenage girl, you probably think about your weight—be it high or low—all the time. Every time you take a sip of that oh-so-tempting milkshake, every time you miss track practice, every time you try on a new dress…you name an action, it might trigger a thought about weight for someone.
Don’t shoot the messenger, but this does not change in college. Girls [ ...continue reading ]

It only recently occurred to me how common suicide is. Tragically, suicide is the third most common cause of teen deaths in America. Many teenagers don’t know that suicides are even happening in the social scenes around them. But in a survey of high school students, the National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center found that almost one in five teens had thought about suicide, about one in six teens had made plans for suicide, and more than one in 12 teens had attempted suicide in the last year. That is enough to scare me, and should put other teens [ ...continue reading ]

Living in Minnesota is so, so fun for me. My street alone has probably 30 kids of all different ages, so you can always find a friend. The winters here are very, very, very cold, but school is never cancelled. Everyone hopes and dreams that winter will be over by early April (it never is). When spring rolls around everyone is wearing shorts in 30 degree weather—because it’s warm for us.
My neighborhood is close to everything: the park, Dairy Queen, school, country club…anything you can think of, we’re close to. Our summers are amazing. When school is out, [ ...continue reading ]

I enjoyed reading this book because it was a light and easy read for what might have been a boring subject. No one wants to read a stack of college books that are supposedly helpful, so it’s good to find one that actually is helpful. Some of the points the author made were obvious, exaggerated or ridiculous, but he also made some good points that I had never thought of before. I liked reading the stories that he included in the different lessons—they helped keep me interested in the book. I have to admit, many stories made me [ ...continue reading ]

This past Sunday was the first really hot day of spring in Notre Dame, Ind. It was 85 degrees out and absolutely gorgeous. After being cooped up inside this past winter, my friends and I decided to lay out in our bathing suits on the avenue located on the SMC campus. We brought music, homework and snacks. It was so much fun to be able to talk and relax out on the grass.
Classes have been so stressful, and the semester is going by too quickly. We joked around, took silly pictures and watched people as they went by. [ ...continue reading ]

Ask any of my close girlfriends—my sisters—and they will all say I am the queen of over-thinking, over-analyzing, over-worrying…the list goes on and on. I find something to worry about that wouldn’t even occur in anyone else’s mind. Maybe I am just a huge over-thinker, but I know that everyone over-thinks things once in a while, especially when it comes to friends, guys and appearance.
Being girls, we pride ourselves in how we appear to others—even if that means spending hours before an event applying makeup and ironing hair. And the truth is, most people don’t realize the angst [ ...continue reading ]
