Power of the Media

Teenagers connect around the world with social media sites - image taken from CreativeCommons.org

When teenagers are looking for articles on current events or the latest scandal in the news, it is not very likely they will sit at the kitchen table reading a newspaper. Although the newspaper has been very popular to adults for centuries, the new way to reach teenagers—or anybody for that matter—is through the Internet. People all over the world want their news, and they want it fast.

Earlier this year, Egypt erupted in protests. Around January, nearly 10,000 people began filling the streets of Cairo to demonstrate against the government. They marched through the streets demanding the [ ...continue reading ]

Our American Idol Comes Home

Classmates of American Idol contestant Robbie

Wow, what an unbelievable week my friends and I have experienced, all because our friend Robbie Rosen made the top 24 in “American Idol”! Camera crews and reporters have been at our school for days, asking us questions, and sitting in on our chorus practices. I had my share of publicity, too, this week, when a picture of me singing (yes, mouth wide open) was in Newsday as part of an article covering Robbie.

But the big excitement has been watching my friend Robbie sing on the big stage for national television, and then tweeting and talking to [ ...continue reading ]

Sunday Afternoons Are DIY Days

I love Sunday afternoons for the sole reason that they are so relaxing. Sometimes I feel like I should be doing something somewhat productive though; like a DIY project. Milk and Honey Shoes: A Dream Come Shoe

Milk and Honey Shoes

Shoes—the thing taking up possibly the most room in my college dorm, yet the thing I will never feel I have enough of. They’re wonderful.  For me, sometimes putting on a hot pair of shoes is all it takes to turn a bad mood or bad day around. The thing is though, I often have the issue of not being able to find the exact shoes I have in mind for a certain outfit when I go out shopping at the stores… a common problem of shoe connoisseurs around the world.

Milk and Honey Shoes

Needless to [ ...continue reading ]

The Night at the Lake

Night at the lake

It was July 4 and a beautiful day out. My friend Jas invited a bunch of us up to her lakehouse for the day since they have fireworks there on the Fourth. My family was invited as well, and I went up with them and my two friends. And Jas’ cousin Craig, who is a senior, brought up his friends Terrence and Ben. I had been hanging out with them earlier in the summer because my friend Gabby was hanging out with them a lot, too. I hated Terrence originally because he was a player and played two of [ ...continue reading ]

College Is Calling!

It seems to be every parent’s dream to send their kids off to college, so they can get a great education pursuing what they love and find a successful, well-paying job and eventually settle down and provide them with grandchildren some day. In thinking about all those big goals, it’s easy to forget about the little stuff leading up to the great milestones in life. The graduations. The packing and unpacking. Getting rid of old treasures from your childhood room and most importantly, the good-byes. But as my older sister is going off to college next fall, I [ ...continue reading ]
