This past summer, I went from getting (then inexplicably losing) a job at a local bakery to teaching little kids how to crack an egg in my very own Little Iron Chef Camp.
My friend and I landed bakery positions back in April 2010, due to begin work in June. We felt very lucky, considering there was a huge influx of unemployed college students in our area scarfing up the summer positions. Unfortunately, our sighs of relief quickly turned to panic as the owner denied ever giving us the job only a week before we were [ ...continue reading ]

While I was in Washington, D.C., for a summer program at Georgetown University , I had the opportunity to meet other high school kids from all over the country and the world! There were kids from everywhere from California to Kansas to South Korea! People drove, took a train or had some very long plane rides. Coming from Pittsburgh, Pa., I probably had one of the shortest commutes.
I was very nervous about meeting people and finding a group of friends to hang out with during the week. The first person I met was my roommate, [ ...continue reading ]

This summer has come off as somewhat of a dream, a dream that I don’t ever want to wake up from. Sadly, my sun-kissed skin has already started spending its time under fluorescent lights, and my alarm blares every morning at 6 a.m. In my last few weeks of summer, I tried to live it up and fit in everything I could before I packed up and moved to school.
After two months at my first real job—an internship at the PR agency Euro RSCG Worldwide PR—then field hockey camp with my high school team in [ ...continue reading ]

During the school year we dread waking up every morning to go through the daily grind, we count down the days until summer vacation and when final exam week arrives, we jump for joy as each one finishes. Finally, it’s summertime!! It’s the best feeling to know that after a hard year at school, you finally get a break. Summer plans consist of many things; for many teenagers summer means going away for some time and leaving friends from home for a few weeks, or even the whole summer. Mixed feelings are always hard—the ambivalence of, yes, you’ve [ ...continue reading ]

There is nothing better than spending a hot summer day with your best friends. Driving in one of our cars all together with the windows rolled down, our hair blowing, our freshly sun-kissed skin glowing and a classic summer song like What I Got by Sublime playing full blast. Even the smell of sunscreen mixed with everything else summer makes me happy. It’s an unexplainable feeling that makes you think it’s too good to be true!
We laugh at each other when we try to sing as loud as we can to the tunes pumping on our iPods. [ ...continue reading ]

It seems to be every parent’s dream to send their kids off to college, so they can get a great education pursuing what they love and find a successful, well-paying job and eventually settle down and provide them with grandchildren some day. In thinking about all those big goals, it’s easy to forget about the little stuff leading up to the great milestones in life. The graduations. The packing and unpacking. Getting rid of old treasures from your childhood room and most importantly, the good-byes. But as my older sister is going off to college next fall, I [ ...continue reading ]

With summer comes lots of things. Late nights going out with your friends, days at the beach, afternoons filled with frozen yogurt and shopping. Fun activities, but hard on your wallet. The solution to a draining money supply? A job.
During the spring months, teenagers are on the prowl for a job. My school is really close to Stanford University, and many incoming juniors and seniors contact professors in hopes of an internship on campus. Teens seek out the local frozen yogurt and gelato places downtown or apply for jobs at local summer camps for kids.
