Before I get to my point, I will admit that I’m two years late getting started on this whole driving thing. I’m 18, yes. And, yes, I still don’t have my driver’s license. But I did just get my permit, and one thing we talked about A LOT in Driver’s Ed was phone usage in an automobile.
I don’t want to sound all preachy, but I realized what a big deal it is. Did you know that texting while driving has a more severe effect on your concentration than drinking five beers? Did you know that [ ...continue reading ]

Being part of the first generation of texters, I seem to know all of the ins and outs of the phenomenon. Even though I am not a licensed driver yet, I am still fully aware of all of the dangers of “texting behind the wheel.” Being the passenger of many of my friends who are all starting to get their licenses, it makes me nervous when they even look at their phone for a split second, knowing anything can happen as soon as they take their eyes off of the road. A problem we have that applies to [ ...continue reading ]

Saying goodbye is one of the hardest things a person can do, even if it’s just for a little while. For a teenage girl to be leaving her best friend for a whopping three and a half weeks is never easy. My best friend, Gadea, goes to boarding school with me and lives in Madrid, Spain, when she’s not at school. I only see her during the school year, and after this year, she will return to Spain to finish the rest of her high school career there. Everyday spent with her now is precious. This is why [ ...continue reading ]

At 7:25 every night I say goodbye to my best friend: my BlackBerry. I slide my phone into the box labeled with my last name in the common room and trudge down the long hallway to my room. At 7:30, my prefect’s voice echoes loudly through the dorm: “Study hall’s in, girls!!” Great.
Now for the worst part. My Internet shuts off. I am stuck sitting uncomfortably at a wooden desk for two hours. Unable to text, Facebook, IM, or video chat until 9:30, when the Internet is back and all is as it should be.
Cruel and [ ...continue reading ]

You know that guy you occasionally see around the classroom buildings or running out of his dorm because he’s late to class again. You’re not even sure if he knows your name, but you’ve never put much thought toward it. He’s never done anything to catch your eye. Plus, you have a million and one things to worry about that are more important than some guy you barely notice. If it weren’t for that one unexpected IM, I might have never known Joe Anderson (alias to protect the innocent), my mystery [ ...continue reading ]

So what’s the deal with teens and our cell phones? They’re like an essential body part—we feel incomplete without them. Cell phones are our connection to friends and family out of the country, out of state, even right next to us. They’re a fast social networking device that helps us stay connected to others so that they’re never more than a call or text away. Since I don’t drive yet, one of the biggest reasons I always have my cell phone by my side is the convenience factor. Knowing that the person will get [ ...continue reading ]

In the early days of 2010, I am reflecting on weaning two teens from a consumption mindset. It’s been interesting. For starters, there were no allowance increases in 2009. I urged my two girls to share more (as if that would happen, with bickering daughters) and to babysit more (as if the local families with young children could afford to go out). My older daughter even returned to work at the day camp she loathed when there were no minimum-wage jobs to be had last summer. Thanks to her advanced math skills, she [ ...continue reading ]
