When teenagers are looking for articles on current events or the latest scandal in the news, it is not very likely they will sit at the kitchen table reading a newspaper. Although the newspaper has been very popular to adults for centuries, the new way to reach teenagers—or anybody for that matter—is through the Internet. People all over the world want their news, and they want it fast.

Today I went to my very first conference! It was called What Teens Want Marketing Conference. As we walked in, I was handed a guest pass and a gift bag full of many different items, including a cute notepad and pen, a Pop Star magazine, a $10 prepaid card to Stardoll and some other stuff, too. Being at a conference about, well, me automatically made me feel quite special. At 7:25 every night I say goodbye to my best friend: my BlackBerry. I slide my phone into the box labeled with my last name in the common room and trudge down the long hallway to my room. At 7:30, my prefect’s voice echoes loudly through the dorm: “Study hall’s in, girls!!” Great.
Now for the worst part. My Internet shuts off. I am stuck sitting uncomfortably at a wooden desk for two hours. Unable to text, Facebook, IM, or video chat until 9:30, when the Internet is back and all is as it should be.

There’s a new digital lexicon spoken fluently by today’s teenagers but barely understood by their elders. Naturally, POS (“parent over shoulder”) is on the list. This private language is only one facet of the complex of communications used by teens today. Technology, microculture and, most of all, interactivity have combined to create a whole new world of communication for teens and their families.
